Europe by car: places we’d choose ourselves this year

This summer favors trips that allow you to travel with greater peace of mind and more flexibility. Many clients today also prefer more accessible destinations that can be comfortably reached by car and where several regions can be combined within one trip at their own pace.

For our current selection, we have included several European regions and hotels that we believe are worth attention this season. Places that combine excellent gastronomy, a distinctive location, a high standard of service, and the atmosphere of the destination as a whole. Mountain retreats in the Dolomites and the Austrian Alps are complemented by the Istrian coast and Podhlavický mlýn, one of the projects we are personally involved in.

Summer inspiration

Dolomites, Italy

8 hours by car from Prague

In summer, northern Italy offers an ideal combination of mountain nature, excellent gastronomy, and active relaxation. The Dolomites are among the destinations that can easily be combined with a road trip across several regions while offering a distinct change of pace compared to seaside resorts.

One of our recommendations is FORESTIS Dolomites, a mountain retreat located at an altitude of 1,800 metres with views of the Dolomite panorama. Minimalist architecture, extensive wellness facilities, and an emphasis on tranquility are complemented here by its own forest cuisine concept, working with local ingredients, foraging in the surrounding forests, and the natural processing of ingredients. The entire hotel is built around a connection with nature, relaxation, and a slower pace of stay.

Switzerland

8.5 hours by car from Prague

Mountain scenery, crystal-clear lakes, and precise service make Switzerland one of the most interesting destinations for summer stays. The region around Lake Lucerne also makes it easy to combine mountain views, wellness, gastronomy, and an active programme within one trip.

Bürgenstock Resort above Lake Lucerne is one of the resorts we most often recommend in Switzerland. The extensive property, set high above the lake, combines modern architecture, several hotel concepts, extensive wellness facilities, and panoramic views of the surrounding Alpine landscape. One arrival option is to travel by boat across Lake Lucerne and then take the historic funicular directly up to the resort. The entire resort is built around privacy, a high standard of service, and a distinctive location with views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps.

Istria, Croatia

9 hours by car from Prague

In addition to its coastline and smaller seaside towns, Istria also offers one of the most interesting gastronomic scenes in Croatia during the summer, along with a noticeably calmer atmosphere than many other Mediterranean destinations. In our view, Istria has long been one of the ideal regions for summer stays by the sea, whether thanks to its quality restaurants, wineries, or the overall atmosphere of the area.

Adriatic Istria Resort offers modern facilities directly on the coast, wellness, and an ideal starting point for exploring the region, including the family-owned Lisjak olive mill in Slovenia. The project is one of the most notable new addresses in the area. From 2027, it will also become part of the Anantara brand, which in our view only confirms the direction in which the premium side of Istria is moving today.

Salzkammergut, Austria

4.5 hours by car from Prague

The lakes of the Salzkammergut region in the Austrian Alps offer a combination of mountain nature, active pursuits, wellness, and excellent gastronomy. The entire area works very well both for a stay of several days and as part of a longer summer journey across Austria. In summer, visitors come here not only to relax by the lakes, but also for cycling, mountain hikes, and other activities in the surrounding Alpine landscape.

The iconic Rosewood Schloss Fuschl continues the tradition of Alpine retreats and is one of the most distinctive hotel addresses in the entire region. The historic castle directly on the lake combines Austrian tradition, extensive wellness facilities, and activities connected with the surrounding nature, from mountain hikes to fishing on the lake. The entire hotel is built around a combination of unique location, history, and atmosphere that captures the character of the Salzkammergut region very well.

Podhlavický mlýn

1.5 hours by car from Prague

Alongside foreign destinations, we are increasingly recommending places in the Czech Republic that can offer a similar level of atmosphere, service, and overall stay experience. One of them is Podhlavický mlýn in the Českodubsko landscape, a project we are personally involved in creating.

The boutique hotel, created through the conversion of the original mill, has been renovated with respect for its historical legacy and the more than four-hundred-year history of the estate. The entire concept is based on the atmosphere of boutique hotels inspired by the 1930s and connects the history of the original mill with contemporary design, quality gastronomy, and attention to detail.

The hotel offers 10 rooms, a countryside SPA, and a restaurant, but the main role is played above all by the setting around the mill itself and the tranquility of the entire location. Podhlavický mlýn is an ideal place for those seeking relaxation in the middle of nature, as well as for smaller private events.

Whether you are planning a several-day road trip across Europe this year, a stay by a lake in Switzerland, a quieter part of the Croatian coast, or simply a few days away from the city in the Czech Republic, we will be happy to help you with the selection and complete organisation of the entire trip. We design every itinerary individually according to your expectations and ideas for the whole journey.
